Bathrooms: Flush Latrines & Septic System

Bathrooms; flush latrines and septic system were built at the village school house. The structure, made of stones from the surrounding river banks, is equipped with 4 flush latrines, with separate sides for the boys and girls. The septic system decomposes waste organically without human handling or chemicals. The decomposed matter can then be used as fertilizer. The structure has been designed to function in harmony with the ecosystem without contamination to the environment.

HOTC supplied the design of the structure, building materials, and technical support. The community and water committee were responsible for the coordination of the labor, gathering of natural materials and the construction of the facility. The village water committee has been fully trained to maintain this new sanitation system.


Septic System Functions Organically with Huacaria's Ecosystem

The school aged children receive ongoing training from the water committee, their teachers. The primary school children are responsible for daily maintenance of the hygiene structure.
